Tree Removal in Galt

Tree work across Galt, from the stone-house streets of West Galt and the Dickson Hill slopes to the newer blocks south toward Myers Road.

Galt is where Cambridge's two layers of tree rules meet most often. The old town on both banks of the Grand has the city's largest private trees, century oaks, sugar maples, black walnuts and riverbank willows on steep lots behind limestone houses, and nearly all of them are well over the 20 cm threshold at which the City's Private Tree Preservation By-law requires a permit, an arborist report and replacement planting. Many of those same lots run down into the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area, where grading the bank or tracking a machine down the slope needs the GRCA's permission. The working reality is dismantling by climber with everything rigged, cranes set up on narrow streets to lift over roofs, and a strong bias toward pruning and reduction over removal, because on a Galt bank the tree is usually doing a job. Oaks here are not pruned between April and November, following Ontario's oak wilt guidance. The boulevard trees along the old streets are the City's and go to Service Cambridge at 519-623-1340, and dead ash along the river paths is common and goes through the City's dead-tree request.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Cambridge tree permit apply in Ayr?

No. Ayr is in North Dumfries Township, so Cambridge's By-law 23-105 stops at the city boundary and the township's own requirements apply. The Region's Woodland Conservation By-law and the CFIA ash regulated area cover the whole region including North Dumfries. We confirm the rules for the address before quoting.

Is there a travel charge for Blair or Ayr?

No. The villages and township properties around Cambridge are quoted on the same terms as the city. The tree, the access and the paperwork set the price, not the distance.

Do you handle the permit application for me?

Yes, where one is needed. The arborist report, the photographs and the application go in together, and the neighbour's consent form is organised with you for a boundary tree. The City's application fee and any cash-in-lieu are paid to the City and shown separately on the quote.
