Stump Grinding in Cambridge

On a flat Hespeler lot a stump is an obstacle and grinding it is routine. On a Galt bank above the Grand, the stump and its roots may be the only thing stopping the slope from going into the river.

Stump grinding is the usual last step of a removal and on most Cambridge lots it is straightforward: a grinder chews the stump down 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches) below grade, the surface roots are chased out where they cross the lawn, and the hole is filled with the grindings or backfilled with topsoil ready for sod. Where a fence post, a footing or a new tree is going in the same spot, it goes deeper, and the quote says so.

The riverbank exception

A large part of Cambridge's housing stands on the valley slopes of the Grand, the Speed and Mill Creek. On those lots the root plate of a big willow or silver maple has been knitting the bank together for eighty years, and grinding it out removes that reinforcement at the same time as it disturbs the soil around it. Within the Grand River Conservation Authority's regulated area, grading and the placing or removal of fill need permission under O. Reg. 41/24, and a stump ground out of a bank with the slope regraded afterwards can fall squarely into that. The honest advice on a steep valley lot is often to take the tree down to a low stump or a monolith, leave the roots in the ground to rot slowly while new vegetation takes over, and skip the grinder. Where the stump does need to go, the GRCA's Map Your Property tool and a call to 519-621-2761 settle whether a permit is needed before the machine arrives.

Locates first

A grinding wheel does not distinguish a root from a gas service. A locate is requested through Ontario One Call before any stump is ground, marking buried gas, hydro, water and telecom. One Call does not mark private lines: the wire to the garage, irrigation, invisible dog fence, low-voltage lighting or the gas run to a pool heater are the owner's to point out. The older streets of Galt and Preston carry a further possibility of abandoned services, old stone footings and filled wells beside a stump, and that is in the quote as a possibility rather than a surprise.

What sets the price

  • Diameter at grade, including the root flare, not the trunk diameter higher up.
  • Access. A compact grinder fits a standard gate; a big stump behind a narrow Hespeler side passage may mean lifting a fence panel or a slower machine.
  • Slope. A grinder on a steep lot needs anchoring and more time, where it can be used at all.
  • Roots and grindings. Chasing roots across a lawn and hauling grindings for a topsoil backfill are separate lines.

Replanting over a ground stump

Where a City permit has required replacement trees, where they go matters. Grindings are wood and pull nitrogen out of soil as they rot, so a replacement tree should be planted offset from the old stump or the hole has to be cleaned out and filled with soil. Say what the spot is for and the grinding is done to suit it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you grind a stump on a slope above the river?

Sometimes, and sometimes we will tell you not to. On a steep bank inside the GRCA regulated area the roots may be stabilising the slope, and grinding and regrading can need the conservation authority's permission. The site visit settles whether grinding, a low monolith or leaving the stump is the right call.

Will the roots keep growing?

No. Without the stump and its leaves the root system dies off over a few years. Species that sucker from roots, like some poplars and black locust, are dealt with by cutting the suckers as they appear for a season or two.

Do I need a permit to grind a stump?

Not from the City. The private tree by-law regulates injuring or destroying a living tree; a stump left from a permitted or exempt removal is not a tree. On a valley lot the GRCA question is the one that matters.
